Kaiju No. 9:That should do it. I've figured out mankind's intellectual levels. On an individual basis, it's nothing special. So their weapon is the ability to accumulate knowledge across generations, then. What about on your end?
Kaiju No. 9:I've more or less figured out the layout of the base. Now we can move our plan to the next phase.
Kaiju No. 9:Yes, goodbye. Time to bring the Kaiju power that fell into human hands back to our side.
― Kaiju No. 9 conversing with his clone (Kaiju No. 8 episode 12, "Kafka Hibino")

Kaiju No. 9 (怪獣9号,   Kaijū Kyu-gō) is the main antagonist of the 2024 animated series Kaiju No. 8.

Kaiju No. 9 made his first appearance during the Secondary Selection Exam. He injured Kikoru Shinomiya and revived all the deceased Kaiju in the area before vanishing. He later reappeared during the Sagamihara Neutralization Operation, in which he fought Reno Ichikawa and Iharu Furuhashi. He then proceeded to fight Kaiju No. 8 after he intervened.

Design

Unlike most other Kaiju preceding him, Kaiju No. 9 has a humanoid appearance. His body is thin and skeletal in appearance and is a bone-white color. He has two sharp spines on each shoulder and several dark brown spots on his chest. He has reddish markings on his shoulder spikes, knees, elbows, fingers, and toes. His nails are long and white in color. His head resembles two flat mushroom heads stacked on top of each other. No. 9 can occasionally sprout eyes from his head at will, which he can conceal. Whenever he charges up his finger projectiles, his fingers turn bloated. During his battle with Reno Ichikawa and Iharu Furuhashi, he sprouted two more arms from his back. He later grew several more arms when fighting Kaiju No. 8.

After molting his skin, Kaiju No. 9 became more muscular and his skin turned into a brownish-gray color.

History

Reiwa era

Kaiju No. 8

"Fortitude 9.8"

After all of the Kaiju during the exam were killed by Kikoru Shinomiya, Kaiju No. 9 suddenly appeared and fired a shot at her heart from his finger, incapacitating her for a brief moment. No. 9 began petting the deceased Primigenius Honju and slowly revived it as he did so. Kikoru asked who No. 9 was, to which he seemed surprised at her still being alive. He then noticed Kikoru's combat suit healing her wound and expressed curiosity about it. He finished healing the Honju and turned to Kikoru, growing a pair of eyes. He pointed his finger at her and commanded the Honju to "chew before [it] swallowed." No. 9 fired several shots at Kikoru, severely injuring her before leaving.

Hours later, Kaiju No. 9 sat in a bathroom stall and listened to a news broadcast on the incident he partook in, shocked that the number of fatalities was zero. He wondered if one of the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defense Force captains was really that strong before the reporter mentioned Kaiju No. 8, interesting the creature. No. 9 then received a call on his phone, briefly startling him. He answered and Masahide Tokuda, assuming him to be Monster Sweeper employee Takamichi Hotaka, asked him where he was. No. 9 disguised his face to that of Hotaka's, assuring him that he would be back. No. 9 finished his transformation, noting that humans are so "particular about the time." Kaiju No. 9 walked out of the bathroom to meet with the others, with Toku lecturing him for having worried them. The Monster Sweeper crew then walked back to the site, mentioning the incident that took place during the exam. No. 9's neck briefly extended out of shape before he gained control of it and concealed his identity once more.

"Sagamihara Neutralization Operation At Daybreak"

Kaiju No. 9, disguised as Takamichi Hotaka, arrived in Sagamihara City. He inspected the injury inflicted on a Fanero Plus' carcass. Reno Ichikawa and Iharu Furhashi stumbled across him, with the latter, calling out that the Monster Sweeper cleanup crew would not be needed until later. No. 9 remarked how the Yoju was "no good" due to its reproductive organs having been destroyed. He then wondered if there was a member of the Defense Force who knew all about Kaiju before turning to the two officers, asking them if they knew anything while pulsating bumps grew on his disguised face.

"Kaiju No. 9"

As Furuhashi attempted to warn the disguised No. 9 of the dangerous area, the latter turned around and pointed his finger at him. Furuhashi expressed confusion before, suddenly, No. 9's finger grew bloated and disproportionate. Ichikawa warned Furuhashi to move, but the latter was quickly shot by No. 9's finger projectile. No. 9 noted that his aim seemed to be more inaccurate in his disguised form and proceeded to transform back into his true form. He then stated that he did not want to "return empty-handed" and expressed interest in taking a live officer back as a specimen. Ichikawa attempted to contact the other Defense Force members but was unable to. No. 9 explained that he had developed an area undetectable to the outside world, mentioning that it also functions well to hunt humans.

No. 9 then charged up a finger projectile and fired it at Ichikawa, who attempted to dodge it, but the bullet managed to pierce his torso. Kaiju No. 9 fired another one, this time blowing off a chunk of Ichikawa's leg. No. 9 noted that his aim seemed to be off as he was not hitting his intended targets. No. 9 realized that Ichikawa had noticed when he was about to fire a projectile. To prove his suspicion, he fired another shot, but Ichikawa managed to dodge it in time. Ichikawa then fired a freeze round at No. 9 to little avail. No. 9 fired again at Furuhashi, managing to graze his arm, though he was pushed out of the way by Ichikawa.

After Ichikawa told Furuhashi to leave, the Kaiju began to approach the former. Ichikawa charged at No. 9 and fired several freeze rounds, but the Kaiju dodged them all. He shot another bullet at Ichikawa but missed as the latter continued to fire at him. No. 9 dodged more gunfire and quickly dashed in front of Ichikawa, remarking how he seemed to know a lot about him. Kaiju No. 9 then grew another pair of arms from his back as he prepared to fire again. No. 9 fired from all four of his arms, but Ichikawa was pushed away by Furuhashi, who returned to assist his comrade. No. 9 expressed confusion but realized that Ichikawa was attempting to get Furuhashi to leave for reinforcements. He then explained that no one would be able to leave the space without his permission, leaving the two officers with the only option of fighting.

Ichikawa and Furuhashi joined forces, and then began to attack No. 9. Ichikawa charged at the Kaiju while Furuhashi fired a conducted bullet, briefly stalling No. 9's movements. Kaiju No. 9 fired a projectile at Furuhashi, but he managed to dodge it in time. No. 9, distracted was shot by Furuhashi's conductor bullet before Ichikawa unleashed Maximum Combat Power. He fired several freeze bullets at No. 9, only for the Kaiju to be shielded by a wall of Phaneroplus corpses. Shocked, Ichikawa looked on as Kaiju No. 9 tore open through the carcass wall and prepared to fire his projectiles from all four hands, stating that the officer was "screwed." No. 9 proceeded to fire all of his bullets, severely injuring Ichikawa and leaving him briefly incapacitated. Seeing Ichikawa still able to move, the monster noted how hard it was to halt a human's ability to move without killing them.

Furuhashi fired several times at No. 9, but each bullet was deflected by one of his arms. No. 9 said that he had already gotten used to Furuhashi's surprise attack, and fired two more shots at him, knocking him down. No. 9 approached Ichikawa and fired several more times at him to paralyze him. Grabbing Ichikawa's rifle, Furhashi tried to shoot No. 9 with it but then realized the weapon had been too damaged to use. Kaiju No. 9 told Furuhashi that he no longer had any use for him and prepared another shot, telling him to "go ahead and die now." Suddenly, a voice from behind replied that the only one dying would be No. 9. Startled, No. 9 turned around only to be met by a punch from Kaiju No. 8, knocking his head off and sending him flying.

As he went flying, No. 9 wondered what had just happened before he saw his headless torso, realizing that his head had been knocked off. No. 9's decapitated body picked up its head and reattached it, recognizing Kaiju No. 8. After reassuring Ichikawa, Kaiju No. 8 approached Kaiju No. 9. The No. 9 asked No. 8 why he was attacking him despite being a Kaiju as well. He also stated that Kaiju No. 8 was a lot stronger than he had anticipated. He then expressed his desire to possess No. 8's corpse and fired a finger projectile at his enemy's chest, drawing blood. Seeing that No. 8 was able to withstand his attack, No. 9 grew several more arms from his back, each ready to fire. No. 9 fired several times at No. 8, but each bullet was deflected by the Kaiju's sonic roar.

No. 9 expressed shock before his enemy suddenly dashed forward and punched his torso. No. 8 pummeled No. 9 repeatedly, injuring him and shattering his teeth. Kaiju No. 9 moved the wall of Yoju carcasses to shield himself while he recovered. Suddenly, Kaiju No. 8 tore through the wall and began to punch him over and over again. No. 9 morphed his two extra arms into shields, but No. 8 managed to rupture his shield arms with several powerful blows. No. 9 realized that the injuries he was sustaining were taking too long to heal, leading to him wanting to flee. However, Kaiju No. 8 punched his torso, preventing him from leaving. No. 8 then began to charge up a powerful punch, worrying No. 9. No. 8 delivered a punch to the Kaiju's torso, sending him flying once more and severely injuring him.

Kaiju No. 9 soon crashed onto the ground, his core exposed. Kaiju No. 8 approached No. 9, telling him the fight was over before he was suddenly distracted by the presence of two Defense Force officers. His opponent now distracted, No. 9 partially healed from his injuries and jumped onto a nearby rooftop. Proclaiming that he now understood how Kaiju No. 8 functioned, he threatened to kill the Kaiju the next time they met. To distract No. 8 again, Kaiju No. 9 fired bullets at the two officers, which his enemy shielded. No. 9 noted that Kaiju No. 8's behavior was very human-like despite being a Kaiju. He then bid his enemy farewell and vanished.

"Welcome to the Defense Force"

After his battle with Kaiju No. 8, Kaiju No. 9, disguised as Takamichi Hotaka, walked through an empty mountain road. Suddenly, a car pulled up behind him and honked its horn, which No. 9 ignored and continued to walk. The driver, Kanji Nagamine, got out of the vehicle and told "Hotaka" to get out of the way. No. 9 turned and blankly stared at the man before pointing his finger at him, much to Nagamine's confusion. He prepared to fire a finger-bullet at him before deciding against it, then walked past Nagamine. The man demanded that No. 9 speak before the latter's disguised head grew bloated and large. Nagamine stared in shock before No. 9's head bit down on him, killing and assimilating him.

Now disguised as Kanji Nagamine, Kaiju No. 9 got into the latter's car and drove off. As No. 9 drove, he listened as a radio news broadcast made mention of the Defense Force having officially designed Kaiju No. 9 as such. Numerous bumps on No. 9's disguised face and wrists pulsated before his head subconsciously reverted back to normal. No. 9 wondered about a way to kill Kaiju No. 8 before noticing his head shifted back to normal. He disguised his head again, noting that he'd have to remain hidden while he got used to this new form of his.

"Kafka Hibino"

In his hideout in Kunitachi City, Kaiju No. 9 remarked how he now understood mankind's intellectual level. He explained that, on an individual basis, it was not special, but that they possessed the ability to accumulate knowledge across generations, calling it their "weapon." He then asked his clone what he had uncovered. His clone replied that he had more-or-less figured out the layout of the Defense Force's base and that they would be able to move on to the next part of their plan. No. 9 understood and excused himself. Having shed his skin, Kaiju No. 9 stated that it was time to bring the Kaiju power that "fell into human hands" back to the side of Kaiju.

Abilities

Finger gun

Kaiju No. 9's primary form of attack is firing projectiles from his fingers. These projectiles are strong enough to penetrate and incapacitate targets. They are capable of blowing off chunks of flesh and breaking through combat suit shields. They also managed to draw blood from Kaiju No. 8. Before firing, his fingers grow bloated and disproportionate.

Assimilation and shapeshifting

Kaiju No. 9 can assimilate and disguise himself as humans to blend in with them. He took the form of Monster Sweeper, Inc. employee Takamichi Hotaka, and later consumed Kanji Nagamine, then morphed into his appearance. He is also able to grow several limbs out of his body and even morph them to function as shields.

Regeneration

Kaiju No. 9 is able to regenerate injuries, though this takes a small amount of time.

Intelligence and adaptability

Kaiju No. 9 is shown to be extremely intelligent, always inquiring to learn more about how his opponents function. He intelligently disguises himself among humans to remain hidden so he can understand more about them. No. 9 was shown to adapt to various situations in battle, shown when he had already anticipated a conductive bullet from Iharu Furuhashi and Reno Ichikawa's fully unleashed combat power attack, which he countered by shielding himself with a wall of Phaneroplus carcasses. When bombarded with blows from Kaiju No. 8, he attempted to retreat, knowing that No. 8 was too powerful for him to beat at that moment. After nearly being killed, No. 9 took advantage of No. 8 being distracted by Defense Force soldiers to escape the former's grasp. He also remarked that he now understood how Kaiju No. 8 worked.

He was also shown to clone himself in order to multitask, with his clone playing a game of chess to develop a sense of strategy and discover the layout of the Defense Force's base.

Evolution

Kaiju No. 9 molted a new form suited better to combat, improving on his older body.

Kaiju manipulation

Kaiju No. 9 is capable of reviving fallen kaiju, as demonstrated during his appearance in the exam. Additionally, the kaiju's power can be greatly enhanced after revival, shown when the revived Honju Primigenius' fortitude was greater than before. He is also able to modify the anatomy of Kaiju, such as how he altered the location of the Phaneroplus' cores and imparted the Yoju forms with reproductive organs. While fighting Reno Ichikawa and Iharu Furhashi, and later Kaiju No. 8, he was shown to telekinetically move Fanero Plus carcasses to shield himself from attacks.

Undetectable space

Kaiju No. 9 can generate a large space to avoid detection by the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defense Force, as well as to hunt humans more easily. This space is able to block communication signals to those outside the area. When other organisms are in this area, they are unable to leave without No. 9's permission.

Weaknesses

Despite being very powerful, Kaiju No. 9 can be killed by having his Core destroyed much like other kaiju. When charging his finger projectiles, the change in his finger's mass allows the attack to be anticipated. Electricity from Iharu Furuhashi's conductor round made it hard for him to move. Punches from Kaiju No. 8 were shown to injure him greatly, knocking No. 9's head off, shattering his teeth, and rupturing his body. No. 9 often has trouble maintaining his disguised forms, accidentally slipping into his true Kaiju appearance.
